![]() This stockpiling and prepositioning is prudent and necessary for emergency response to immediate crises (such as natural disasters), but for protracted crises where displacement lasts for years on end, it has become a burden. Tarps are not manufactured close to the need but are global products shipped worldwide and stored in large warehouses ready to be deployed. Tracking back a bit further, these same three companies have won these same tenders for decades. In fact, if you scour the publicly available tenders on the UN websites, you’ll typically see the same three companies being awarded the largest contracts. Put another way, only those who were already producing the tarps can compete for the massive contracts to supply them. Highly specialized and cost-constrained has served to create massive barriers of entry to competition. This tarp has evolved to be highly specialized in a very cost-constrained environment. However, every decision, especially when globalized, has an abundance of unintended consequences. If the product is good, the agencies can be confident that this product serves families well globally. Specifications ensure a high standardization level, which means the tarp a refugee family receives in Bangladesh is substantially identical to the one a family receives in the Central African Republic. The problem comes down to sourcing and durability. Stay tuned this year as we pilot both the material and the ability to sew these tarps in the settings where they’re most needed! ![]() It lasts longer, is locally sourceable, and is much more sustainable than alternatives. If we can pull it off, we even hope to pay refugees to sew tarps that other refugees will rely on, thus incorporating them in the economy of the goods produced.īillboard tarps are a much-needed change for shelter tarping for refugees. Ultimately we hope to, like our flooring, root it deeply in the community that is hosting refugees. Secondly, we’ll pilot the local collection and manufacturing of the material. We hope to partner with organizations representing diversity in both culture and climate to see where this approach is most effective. In 2021, we will pilot this material in 2 different refugee camps. In the process, we repurposed over 92 tons of plastic while offsetting the need for virgin material to be deployed. ![]() We even found ourselves positioned to help over 11,000 US disaster victims because of the groundwork we laid during the pandemic. In 2020, we prototyped and tested locally. Every Shelter’s role here is to expand and demonstrate the relevance of this approach globally and to lay the groundwork to scale this approach to reach as many families as possible. They’re forced to rely on these thin membranes for years on end. To be clear, if the world has tarp experts, it’s these families. We saw refugees using them, and unlike the standard shelter tarps, these lasted for years and not months. Using discarded billboards for tarps wasn’t our idea.

Please see here for the rationales behind such setting. Most of my decks are more or less the same with the following Anki setting: If memory serves, I mostly followed the recommendation from this and this. As I explained, it doesn’t make sense to banish the card and re-learn it completely again. Regardless how you tweak other parameters, one thing I’m certain of is that the New Interval for lapses COULDN’T AND SHOULDN’T BE ZERO. I also recommend you give this part of the Anki manual a look before any changes. If you’re using Anki, I highly recommend tweaking the default setting. I think once people know how the default setting behaves, they would tweak it immediately. I wonder how many users are still using that brutal default setting… I am sure a lot of people never bothered to tweak the settings, not to mention reading the manual to understand what each parameter means and how it affects the algorithm. It’s like repetitively building a sand castle only to be washed away moments later. Imagine the pain of reviewing a card correctly for years and then slipped for once… all the previous effort to expand the retrieval schedules. ![]() You will mostly likely continue to struggle with the review count. Having to review it over and over again leads to a lot of frustration. Just a one-time corrective feedback for that card should probably make it retrievable again for a long time (years maybe). The default setting is highly inefficient as having to start over is completely unnecessary. But do you think you need the same amount of time memorizing the old number when you need it, like you have never seen it? Of course not! Maybe just a few initial numbers are enough to jog your memory and you’ll spill out the rest. If you’ve used the new number long enough, you’re bound to “forget” the old number (retrieval-induced forgetting). Losing retrieval strength ≠ losing storage strength.įor example, you’ve changed your phone number after using the old one for years. My point is, just because you temporarily couldn’t retrieve the information doesn’t mean you have to re-learn it, treating it like you’ve not learned it at all because that piece of memory is still in your long-term memory. “Once information is interrelated with prior knowledge in long-term memory, it tends to remain stored, if not necessarily accessible.” when you were most alert maybe you could have answered it if you’d just racked your brains a little harder.įrom “ Self-Regulated Learning: Beliefs, Techniques, and Illusions“: So you may be tired after doing Anki for 4 hours and that body state will negatively affect your ability to retrieve the answer maybe you could have answered that card at 10 a.m. Contextual cues, including environmental, mood state, body state cues etc, will influence the accessibility of a memory representation. There are a lot of factors affecting your retrieval strength, i.e., recalling the correct answer. ![]() I discovered this brutal New Interval setting only after 4 years of using Anki. If you then fail it ONCE (pressed ‘Again’), Anki would banish the card back to square one. In the default Anki setting, if you get a card wrong, the New Interval for lapses would render it new again, like you’ve never seen or learned that card.įor example, you have answered a card correctly (pressed ‘Easy’) for 10 times over 3 years. If the card had a 100 day interval, the default of 0% would reduce the interval to 0 New interval controls how much Anki should reduce the previous interval by. ![]() Terms of Use: These templates are for one-time use for the customer only. Other Sectors can only be captured by destroying all enemy Cores that are located around the area. The list of enemies relies heavily on the "Threat" of said Sector. Over the course of a 45-day observation period, however, the researchers saw the leopard cub hanging out with its foster family on 29 different days. Researchers thought the blended family would last only briefly in 2017, an African lioness in Tanzania was seen nursing a leopard cub, but the association lasted for just one day and was “not considered as a formal adoption,” the study authors write. Lions kill both adult leopards and their cubs, while leopards are prone to attacking unguarded lion cubs.Īnd yet, the mother lion, her lion cubs and her spotted leopard baby, all got along just fine. “They are at perpetual odds,” Stotra Chakrabarti, study co-author and animal behavior researcher at the University of Minnesota, tells Cara Giaimo of the New York Times. belonged to mutually competing species.” Lions and leopards, by contrast, compete for the same resources in the wild-and are usually not very fond of one another. But in these cases, according to the researchers, “none of the foster parents and adoptees. More recently, a bottlenose dolphin mother was observed caring for a melon-headed whale calf over the course of more than three years. In 2006, scientists described the adoption of a marmoset by a family of wild capuchin monkeys. But competing animals caring for each other's young? That's virtually unheard of.ĭheeraj Mittal/Deputy Conservator of Forests in Indiaīefore the lioness and her leopard cub pounced onto the scene, there had been just two other documented instances of interspecies adoption. Female cheetahs, for instance, are known to adopt orphaned male cubs that, once they reach adulthood, form large coalitions with the mother’s own offspring. It’s not unheard of for animals to look after non-biological offspring of the same species, but “such acts directly help in boosting the lifetime reproductive success,” the study authors write. Raising young-nursing them, gathering food for them, making sure they stay safe-requires a lot of time and energy, and is typically done in the interest of propagating one’s own genes. This rare case of interspecies foster care left the researchers entirely befuddled pulished in the journal Ecosphere, they describe the lioness’ behavior as plainly “bizarre.”įrom an evolutionary perspective, caring for the offspring of another animal doesn’t make much sense. The little male cub, who was around two months old, was seen nursing from the lioness, feeding from her kills and playing with her two biological cubs, who were around the same age as the leopard. Zoo staff were alerted by "an unusual amount of roaring" coming from the lion pen early in the morning and arrived to find the 12-year-old female lion Zuri in a fight with the 10-year-old male lion Nyack, the zoo said.In December 2018, researchers at the Gir National Park in India stumbled upon a lioness who appeared to have adopted a baby leopard as one of her own. We appreciate the support from our community as we cope with the loss," the zoo said in the post. "Nyack was a magnificent lion and he will be greatly missed. The incident was announced via a post on the zoo's Facebook page. For a lot of us, it's just like a family member," Mr Hagan said. "They build strong bonds with the animals so any loss affects us all greatly. ![]() The death devastated zookeepers and the cause may never be understood, zoo curator David Hagan said. The lions had been held together at the zoo for eight years, producing three cubs in 2015, and zookeepers had never before noticed any aggression between the two, the zoo said. A lioness has killed the father of her three cubs, suffocating her mate by locking her jaws onto his neck at the Indianapolis Zoo in an attack that zoo staff say they do not fully understand. ![]() (See instructions if you don't know how to install: Instructions on how to install)ĥ.
